One of the most impressive dynasties in the history of Iowa high school sports has added another chapter to the legacy.
West High won its 11th state tennis title, the most in state history, with a 5-2 win over top-ranked Waukee Northwest in the Class 2A championship match on Thursday at Genesis Health Club in Des Moines.
The win completed a dominant season for West High (19-1) which hadn’t lost an individual match in postseason play until the 2A championship and gave the Trojans consecutive 2A crowns for the third time in program history and first since 2017.
Second-ranked West High won back-to-back 5-0 matches on Wednesday to reach the state title match defeating Cedar Falls in the quarterfinals and Pleasant Valley in the semifinals.
West High advanced to the state tournament with consecutive 5-0 substate wins over Western Dubuque and Dubuque Senior.
On Thursday West High continued its dominance while avenging its only loss of the season.
West High went 4-2 in singles play and got a win from the number three doubles team of Patrick Selby and Junze Sun to secure the state title and avenge an 8-1 loss to Waukee Northwest back on April 8.
The Trojans won their final 18 matches of the season dropping a total of six individual singles and doubles matches along the way.
West High was making its 12th consecutive appearance in the state title match on Thursday and with the title surpassed Dubuque Wahlert (10) for the most state championships in state history.
