Mascardo Finishes Fourth; Gilbert Seventh at Class 2A State Tennis Meet

IOWA CITY – For the second straight season Ella Gilbert is a state medalist.
The Liberty High junior capped a strong weekend at the Class 2A state tennis meet with a seventh-place finish on Saturday at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Center.
A sixth-place finisher in 2A last season, Gilbert secured her second consecutive medal with a 2-1 performance on the opening day of the two-day state tournament on Friday.
On Saturday Gilbert split a pair of matches on her way to a seventh-place finish.
Gilbert (17-5) fell to Ava Petersen of West Des Moines Dowling 6-0, 6-2 in the consolation semifinals in her first match on Saturday.
She rebounded for a 6-3, 6-3 win over Lauren Massengarb of Pleasant Valley in the seventh-place match.
West High senior Julianna Mascardo dropped a pair of matches on Saturday to finish fourth.
Mascardo won back-to-back matches on Friday to reach the Class 2A semifinals.
She fell to eventual runner-up Abbie Peterson of Ankeny Centennial 6-3. 6-1 in the semifinals in her first match on Saturday.
Defending 2A singles champion Claire Gu of West Des Moines Valley defeated Mascardo 6-3, 6-1 in the third-place match.
Bettendorf senior Andrea Porubcin won the 2A singles title.
Porubcin defeated Gu 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 in the semifinals and downed Peterson 7-6, 7-6 in the championship match.
The Cedar Falls doubles team of Maya Mallavarapu and Madison Sagers defeated the Cedar Rapids Washington team of Katelynn Kock and Kathryn Zylstra 6-1, 7-6 to win the 2A doubles title.
