West High Senior Shin Finished Fifth at Class 2A State Tennis Meet

IOWA CITY – Following a long opening day at the state tennis tournament West High senior Jayden Shin came up with a strong finish on Wednesday.
Shin won consecutive matches in the consolation bracket on Wednesday to secure a fifth-place finish at the Class 2A state meet at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Center in Iowa City.
The fifth-place performance by Shin was one of two medal performances by the Trojans at the state meet as the West High doubles team of junior Samir Singh and senior Shivy Mannengi finished eighth.
Shin won his final three matches at the 2A state meet to secure his fifth-place finish.
After falling to eventual 2A singles champion Kaden Taylor of Waukee Northwest in the second round Shin won three consecutive consolation matches in straight sets.
Following a 6-0, 6-2 win over Noah Gehler of Bettendorf on Tuesday Shin posted back-to-back consolation bracket wins on Wednesday to finish the meet 4-1.
Shin defeated Jake Althaus of Dubuque Hempstead 6-1, 6-2 in the consolation semifinals and downed Marshalltown senior Jason Strand 6-2, 7-6 (3) in the fifth-place match.
Singh and Mannengi fell to the Bettendorf team of Robert Matera and Jack Reilly 7-5, 6-4 in the consolation semifinals and dropped the seventh-place match to the Linn-Mar doubles tandem of Garrett Bauermeister and Jackson Kramer 7-5, 6-3.
Waukee Northwest swept the titles at the meet as the Wolves doubles team of Kellan Croatt and Jake Nelson won the doubles title with a 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-1 win over Folu Adekunle and Aaron Ingram of Pleasant Valley.
