West Branch Qualifies for State Tournament For First Time With Overtime Win at Pella Christian

It took a few extra minutes to get there but West Branch is headed to the state soccer tournament for the first time in program history.
Pedro Mitom scored the game-winning goal in overtime to lift West Branch to a 2-1 win over No. 14 Pella Christian on Wednesday in the Class 1A, Substate 6 title game in Pella.
The win sends West Branch (14-3) to the state tournament for the first time in just its fourth varsity season.
West Branch will face third-ranked Des Moines Christian (11-4) in a Class 1A state quarterfinal on Tuesday at 10:10 a.m. at Cownie Soccer Complex in Des Moines.
Joe Hamann gave West Branch an early lead in its substate final win on Wednesday with a goal in the sixth minute.
Pella Christian got the equalizer in the second half to send the game to overtime which set the stage for Mitom’s game-winner.
Pella Christian closed the season 7-9.
