West Branch senior Will Bridges is outside of the top-10 after one day at the Class 2A state golf meet but isn’t out of contention.
Bridges shot a five-over-par on the opening day of the Class 2A state meet at Coldwater Golf Links in Ames and sits in a tie for 14th place 18 holes.
However, Bridges is just three shots out of third place in a crowded 2A leaderboard.
Grundy Center freshman Judd Jirkovsky had seven birdies and an eagle on the par-five third while firing an opening round 63 to take control.
Jirkovsky sits eight under and leads Luke Harwick of Dyersville by eight strokes after Harwick shot an even-par 71.
The rest of the 2A field in crowded.
10 players shot 75 on Monday while Bridges and Western Christian junior Caleb Douma are one shot back of that pack after opening-round 76s.
Bridges opened with a 37 on the back nine on Monday and closed with a 39 on the front nine.
The senior had pars on six of his final holes around a bogey on the par-three fifth.
