DES MOINES – Solon did it again.
And this time the Spartans dominated.
Solon used a strong Saturday that included four top-three finishes to win a second consecutive Class 3A title on a sunny Saturday at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
“It’s just so amazing for our team,” Solon senior Emma Wolff said. “I am just so happy that everyone on our team got to finish this the way that we wanted to. We didn’t know halfway through the season if this was going to be possible for us so I’m just so happy.”
A year after winning the first outright state title in program history the Spartans doubled down on Saturday pulling away from the 3A field to win the third title in program history.
Solon got a state title from junior Gracie Federspiel in the 800, runner-up finishes from its shuttle hurdle and sprint medley relay teams and a third-place finish from Aly Stahle in the 200 on Saturday while pulling away from runner-up ADM.
The Spartans finished with 79 points, 17 more than ADM who was runner-up to Solon for the second straight season.
“Pretty much everything went our way,” first-year Solon head coach Jessica Brimeyer said. “We couldn’t have asked for better performances. It went really well.”
Last season Solon scored in 11 events while outdistancing ADM by 18 points for the team title.
Solon was even more impressive this season.
The Spartans scored in 13 events, had nine top-three performances and won three titles including individual crowns by Federspiel and senior Sophia Stahle.
“This is the best feeling in the world,” Federspiel said. “I can’t explain to you the amount of work that we have put in together and for us to be able to come here and do this is amazing.”
Just as it was a year ago it was the depth of the Spartans that led to the title.
Solon scored points in six of seven relays, finishing in the top three in five relays while securing the third consecutive top-two finish at state.
“I think this year it really was the offseason,” Federspiel said. “We really worked together in the offseason and we bonded really quickly in the beginning.”
Federspiel earned her second title of the week with her first career individual crown when she won the 800 in a career-best time of 2:12.97.
“Obviously it’s really fun to run those relays but I just used that momentum in the relays to help me out here,” Federspiel said. “I know everyone is supporting me and that’s something that is really special and that really helps me push.”
Federspiel trailed Atlantic senior Ava Rush for the first 500 meters but surged to the lead down the back stretch.
Rush finished second in 2:14.14.
“I don’t think I was honestly expecting to feel that good,” Federspiel said. “At the 200 mark my legs felt ready to go.”
The title from Federspiel was just the start for Solon.
The Spartans were runner-up in the sprint medley with the team of Mia Duckett, Emma Wolff, Aly Stahle and Sophia Stahle finished in 1:48.22.
The 400-meter anchor leg on the runner-up sprint medley was part of a three-medal day for Sophia Stahle who finished sixth in the 100 hurdles and ran on the runner-up shuttle hurdle relay team.
“I do enjoy running that 400 and today was really nice because we had great competition,” Stahle said. “At the end I had a lot more left in me than 400 hurdles.”
Sophia Stahle joined Mia Stahle, Aly Stahle and Calla Foster on the shuttle hurdle relay team that was runner-up in 1:05.18.
Newton won the 3A shuttle hurdle in 1:04.79.
“I knew it was going to be a race, the anchors are all the finals and they are really fast,” Sophia Stahle said. “I was trying to book it but second place is awesome, we got a new pr and that’s all you can ask for.”
Aly Stahle finished third in the 200 in a time of 25.58 and was on the Spartan 4×100 relay team that finished eighth.
