City High Senior Smith, West High Distance Medley Win Drake Relays Titles

What a difference a year made for Ammon Smith at the Drake Relays.
A year after placing 17th in the 800 at the Drake Relays 800 Smith completed an impressive turnaround on Friday claiming his first individual Drake Relays title winning the 800 in a time of 1:53.42 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
Smith finished 17th out of 17 competitors at the Drake Relays last season with a time of 2:00.36.
On Friday the City High senior edged 3,200 meter champion Chase Lauman of Pella by less than half a second on his way to the 800-meter title.
Teammate Truman Thompson finished fourth in the 800 in a time of 1:53.95 as the top four all posted times under 1:54.
City High senior Ayman Noreldaim was 14th in the 800 in a time of 1:57.01 on what was a strong day for City High.
Senior distance standout Ford Washburn placed fourth in the Elite High School Mile that featured 10 runners from six different states.
Washburn posted a career-best time of 4:07.08 on his way to his fourth-place finish as Simeon Burnbaum of Stevens High School in South Dakota won the title in 4:02.36.
Jackson Heidesch of West Des Moines Dowling was runner-up in 4:02.76 followed by Wyatt Haughton of Shawnee Mission East, Kansas.
City High added a runner-up finish in the distance medley relay and Ronnie Major finished seventh in the long jump with a leap of 21-3.
The City High distance medley relay team of Sam Rew, Major, Jeremiah Madlock and Noreldaim was runner-up to West High in a time of 3:27.65.
West High won its first ever Drake Relays title in the distance medley as the foursome of Todd Rent, Izaiah Loveless, Aidan Jacobsen and Moustafa Tiea won in a school-record time of 3:26.67.
The distance medley win was the highlight of a big day for the Trojan relay teams as West High added a runner-up finish in the 4×200.
Todd Rent, Izaiah Loveless, Jacobsen and Christian Janis set a school record finishing runner-up to champion Johnston in the 4×200 in a time of 1:27.41.
The 4×200 time beat the previous school record of 1:27.43 that was set in 2012.
Izaiah Loveless added an eighth-place finish in the 100 for West High in a time of 11.04.
Solon got a pair of top-10 performances in the discus as Ben Kampman was sixth in 165-1 and Adam Smith was eighth in 161-1.
The Solon girls sprint medley relay team of Aly Stahle, Mia Stahle, Sophia Stahle and Gracie Federspiel finished runner-up in a time of 1:47.35.
Cedar Rapids Kennedy won the sprint medley title in a time of 1:46.1.
Federspiel added a seventh-place finish in the 400 in 58.52 and finished 11th in the 800 in 2:16.17.
City High sophomore Ani Wedemeyer was eighth in the 800 in 2:14.22 and 11th in the 400 in 59.24.
Clear Creek Amana senior Silvana Kabolo finished 10th in the 100 hurdles in 15.34 and West High senior Meena Tate was 15th in the high jump clearing 5-2.
