TIFFIN – Aidan Jacobsen posted a new personal best time in the 400 hurdles for the second meet in a row on Thursday at the Clipper Invitational.
It just so happened there was a little bit of wait in between those career best efforts from the West High junior.
Jacobsen clocked a then-career best time of 53.82 to finish third at the Class 4A state meet in his final 400 hurdle race of the season last spring.
On Thursday Jacobsen picked up where he left off ripping off a 53.51 while winning the 400 hurdles at the 11-team Clipper Invitational on a cool evening in Tiffin.
“I’ve been waiting to run it for a really long time, we’ve had a couple of meets get cancelled so I was really looking forward to that race,” Jacobsen said. “Our coaches really let me focus on that because I didn’t have any events before it except the long jump. I was able to focus in on that and run a pr in an opener and I couldn’t be any happier than that.”
Jacobsen added a title in the long jump and ran on the winning West High 4×400 relay team to highlight an impressive performance by the Trojans.
“I think after last year he just sort found a niche for himself and saw that track and field is a place that he can be successful,” West High coach TJ Craig said of Jacobsen. “Now he is just exploring and testing himself in all those areas and he is showing out. That’s a pretty impressive 400 hurdles.”
In his first crack at the 400 hurdles since his third-place performance at state last season Jacobsen sizzled on Thursday breaking the previous meet record of 56.50 set by former West High standout Cole Mabry in 2018.
The time of 53.51 is the fourth fastest 400 hurdle time in West High history and the fastest in the state this season.
“I was not thinking about pr to be honest, I really wanted a blue standard, sub-55 that was a big goal,” Jacobsen said. “Coming across that line and seeing 53 still flashing when I crossed the line I could not believe it to be honest.”
The 400 hurdle win was the highlight of an all-around impressive night for Jacobsen and his West High teammates.
Jacobsen won the long jump with a meet-record jump of 22-9 ¼ which is the second best in West High history and fourth longest in the state this spring.
“I had a good feeling I was going to fly today to be honest,” Jacobsen said. “I had a little tail wind coming in and I was feeling good all week in practice. I just felt like I was going to jump well today.”
Jacobsen helped the West High 4×400 team to a title in a time of 3:26.12 as the Trojans won three relay events.
The West High 4×200 team set a meet record while winning in 1:30.03 and West High added a win in the 4×800 in 8:20.56.
Izaiah Loveless won the 100 in a meet-record time of 10.91 and was on the winning 4×200 relay team.
Sophomore Moustafa Tiea won the 1,600 in 4:35.69 and joined Loveless and Jacobsen on the winning 4×400 team.
“I’m telling you this squad is seriously, seriously talented,” Jacobsen said. “Izaiah Loveless 10.91 today, he’s fast and then Moustafa Tiea is a top five in the open 800 and he’s only a sophomore. We have a lot of potential to have a really good team this year for sure.”
Solon junior Michael Yeomans set a meet record winning the 800 in a time of 2:00.91 while teammate Adam Smith won the discus with a toss of 155-4 and finished runner-up in the shot put.
Jeremy Bachus was second in the 200 in a time of 23.03 for Solon and Brick Kabela was third in both the 1,600 and 3,200.
“That’s what we want to do is go out and compete,” Solon coach Mark Sovers said. “We want to develop the best complimentary track team that we can from field events to relays to individuals all the way down through our lineup and that was the goal tonight and we had a lot of prs. That’s a credit to them the work that we’ve done in practice lately is finally paying off in meet and it’s been great to see and they just push each other.”
Host Clear Creek Amana got individual runner-up finishes from Andrew Schlemme in the 110 hurdles and Josh Loren in the high jump.
Cale Berry finished third in the 400 hurdles and Clear Creek Amana was runner-up in the 4×800 relay.
“I’m really pleased with our short sprinters right now,” Clear Creek Amana coach Ben Robison said. “I think that crew of 100 and 200 guys is going to click on the same night and when they do watch out.”
