TIFFIN – Unlike their counterparts in sports like basketball, softball or volleyball track and field athletes usually don’t get a lot of opportunities for a ‘home’ meet.
After having a home meet cancelled last season Clear Creek Amana senior Silvana Kabolo wanted to make the most of her final few chances to compete on her home track.
Kabolo did just that on Thursday winning the 100 hurdles and helping the Clear Creek Amana sprint medley relay team to a title at the Jane Astor Relays in Tiffin.
“Especially this year since last year the home meet got cancelled it was special,” Kabolo said. “It was nice to hear the crowd and see how many people from school came to support.”
Kabolo cruised to the 100 hurdle title in a time of 15.62 to highlight a busy night in which the senior standout helped Clear Creek Amana to a trio of top-four relay finishes.
In addition to her individual title in the hurdles Kabolo was part of the Clipper sprint medley relay team that won a title in 1:54.86.
“I think the sprint medley really surprised me,” Kabolo said. “We went in seeded first but we switched up the lineup and being able to get first was really nice.”
Kabolo was also part of the Clear Creek Amana shuttle hurdle relay team that placed fourth and the Clippers 4×100 squad that was runner-up in 52.68.
“We’ve thrown some stuff at her that I know isn’t her favorite and she’s taken it with a smile and done it,” Clear Creek Amana coach Ben Robison said of Kabolo. “She’s been a real team player and that’s been really cool to see.”
The specialty for Kabolo is the 100 hurdles.
She was sixth at the Class 3A state meet in the event last season and looked in solid form on Thursday running away from the field early while winning in 15.62.
“I’m definitely trying to get a sub-15,” Kabolo said. “I ran 15.62 today so I want to get back to the 15.25 area but this is the beginning of the season so it’s really nice starting off like that.”
The title by Kabolo was one of three individual wins for the Clippers at their home meet.
Freshman Elizabeth Timmerman won the long jump with a mark of 17-1 ¾ and Haidyn Barker won 1,500 in 5:16.32.
Emma Descourouez was runner-up in the long jump, third in the 100 and fourth in the 200 and
Kira Barker was fourth in the 1,500 and third in the 3,000.
“Tonight I thought was great and good weather always helps,” Robison said. “I feel like we run good track meets that people want to come to and that brings good teams in and when we compete against better teams we get better and that’s a good thing for us.”
Clear Creek Amana won the 4×200 relay in 1:50.88 and was runner-up in the 4×800.
West High won a trio of relays in a strong showing on Thursday claiming titles in the shuttle hurdle relay, the 4×400 and the 4×800.
Erinn Varga was runner-up in 400 hurdles in 1:07.76 while senior Meena Tate was runner-up in the high jump.
West High won the shuttle hurdle relay in 1:07.45, the 4×400 in 4:12.41 and the 4×800 relay in 10:14.67.
