DES MOINES – The future for the Clear Creek Amana wrestling program appears to be bright.

Of the eight wrestlers the Clippers brough to Des Moines for the Class 3A state tournament six were underclassmen.

Two of those underclassmen will have a shot to bring home hardware after strong performances on Thursday.

Sophomores Cale Nash and Nolan Howell each won a pair of consolation matches to keep their seasons alive on Thursday at the 3A state meet at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

Nash and Howell each improved to 3-1 at the state meet with two wins on Thursday and can secure a spot on the podium with a win in the fourth-round consolation matches on Friday at 6 p.m.

Howell (36-17) won back-to-back matches at 126 pounds on Thursday, pinning Caden Ervin of Pleasant Valley in 5:05 in his first consolation match before earning a 6-4 win over Andrew Roland of Ankeny Centennial.

The No. 18 seed in the 126-pound bracket, Howell is the highest seed remaining and will face sixth-seeded John King (26-8) of Waukee Northwest on Friday.

Nash bounced back from a second-round loss to top-seeded defending state runner-up Dry Ayala of Fort Dodge with a pair of impressive wins on Thursday.

Nash (39-7) won a 10-2 decision over Boone freshman Tate Hollenkamp and added a 9-2 win over Carter Schorsch of Council Bluffs Lewis Central.

No. 17 seed Nash will face fourth-seeded Aiden Serrano (37-6) of Carlisle in his consolation match on Friday.
