DES MOINES – A pair of Solon wrestlers won back-to-back consolation matches on Thursday as the Spartans seek to extend a more than 10-year state medalist streak.

Sophomore Jordan Schmidt and senior Braydon Hoffman each won two consolation matches on Thursday to advance to the third day of the Class 2A state wrestling meet at Wells Fargo Arena on Des Moines.

Schmidt and Hoffman can each secure a spot on the medal stand with a win on Friday morning in the 2A session that starts at 1:30 p.m.

Hoffman (39-19) won a pair of tight decisions on Thursday to remain alive in the 195-pound bracket.

Hoffman won a 4-2 decision over Jack Mendoza of Eagle Grove in his first consolation match on Thursday.

He scored a takedown in overtime to earn a 6-4 sudden victory win over eighth-seeded Curtis Erickson of Vinton-Shellsburg in a third-round consolation win.

The win was the second extra-time win of the season for Hoffman over No. 11 ranked Erickson following a 5-3 win in a dual on February 2.

Hoffman will face Zane Bendorf (42-5) of Harlan in the fourth-round of consolation action on Friday.

Schmidt secured his in the Friday session with back-to-back wins in the 132-pound bracket.

Schmidt (33-10) pinned Charlie Showalter of Hampton-Dumont in 3:20 in his opener on Thursday and won an 8-6 decision over JD Downs of West Marshall.

Schmidt will take on eighth-seeded Max Currier (33-4) of Clear Lake in a fourth-round consolation match on Friday.
