DES MOINES – It took Liberty High junior Vincenzo Lima just one match on Wednesday to equal his win total from his previous state meet appearance.

Lima will look to add to his win total on Thursday after going 1-1 on the opening day of the Class 3A state wrestling meet at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

In his state meet debut two seasons ago as a freshman Lima went 1-2 in Des Moines.

On Wednesday he opened the meet with a second-period pin of Norwalk sophomore Harrison Tripp in a 195-pound opening-round match.

No. 10 ranked Lima (34-7) was pinned by top-seeded and defending state champion McCrae Hagarty of Waverly-Shell Rock in the second round.

Lima joins three Lightning teammates in the second round consolation matches that kick off the second session of the 3A state meet on Thursday at 6 p.m.

The junior will face Brett Scheffler (19-22) of West Des Moines Valley in a second-round consolation match.

Liberty High went 1-3 in opening-round matches on Wednesday.

Junior Tien Pham (21-8) dropped an 8-0 major decision to Logan Gard of Dallas Center-Grimes in a 132-pound opener.

Fourth-ranked Braylon Kammrad of Council Bluffs Lewis Central won a 12-1 major decision over Gavin Benton (3-3) at 170 pounds and Ethan Bibler of Waverly-Shell Rock pinned freshman Landon Bell (20-14) in a 152-pound opening round match.
