Girls Basketball Roundup: Smith Helps West Branch Upset East Buchanan in Regional Quarterfinal

The first big upset of the girls basketball postseason belongs to West Branch.
Senior Sadie Smith came up with a career effort and West Branch made a six-point halftime lead stand up, stunning East Buchanan 57-53 in a Class 2A, Region 1 quarterfinal in Winthrop.
Smith had a double-double with 23 points and 12 rebounds as West Branch improved to 7-16 on the season.
West Branch advances to take on face Bellevue (15-7) on Friday at 7 p.m. in the Region 1 semifinals while East Buchanan ended the season 15-7.
Bellevue defeated Northeast 60-40 on Tuesday in a quarterfinal in Bellevue.
Kylie Pickett added 16 points, four steals, three rebounds and two assists for West Branch.
Olivia Naber had six points, six rebounds and three assists for the Bears.
The win was the fourth in the last five games for West Branch which defeated Lisbon 36-31 in its playoff opener on Saturday.
