Christopher Waikel finally earned his trip to the state wrestling meet.

It came in emphatic, district championship style for the Regina senior.

Waikel won the 195-pound title to highlight a group of four state qualifiers for Regina on Saturday at the Class 1A, District 9 meet at Sigourney-Keota High School.

Regina finished third in the team standings with 116 points while second-ranked Lisbon crowned five champions on its way to winning the team title with 178.5 points.

A year after missing a spot at the state meet by a single win, Waikel went 2-0 with a pin on his way to the 195-pount title.

Waikel (37-9) earned a 5-2 decision over Drew Diers of WACO in the championship match.

Cash Hatfield, Will Aitchison and Ian Udell all advanced to the Class 1A state meet scheduled for February 15-18 at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines with runner-up finishes on Saturday.

Hatfield (26-8) was runner-up at 126 pounds, going 2-1 on Saturday with a 7-4 loss to

Aitchison (33-16) was runner-up at 145 pounds, dropping an 8-6 decision to eighth-ranked Indy Harbaugh of Lisbon in the title match.

Udell (32-11) advanced with a runner-up finish at 182 pounds.

The junior was pinned by Pekin senior Blake Juhl in the championship but rebounded to pin Highland sophomore Isaac Kleese in the wrestleback to earn a spot at state.
