Wrestling Roundup: Scranton, Pierce and Avila Win Titles for West High at Class 3A, District 7 Meet

West High crowned three district champions and qualified four wrestlers for the state meet on Saturday at the Class 3A, District 7 meet at North Scott High School in Eldridge.
Freshman Alexander Pierce, sophomore Justin Avila and junior Kyler Scranton all claimed district titles for the Trojans on Saturday as West High finished fifth with 80 points.
Pleasant Valley won the team title with 203.5 points followed by host North Scott with 196.5 and Dubuque Hempstead with 160.5.
Junior Braden Doyle also secured a spot at the Class 3A state meet set for February 15-18 at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines with a third-place district finish on Saturday.
Pierce, Avila and Scranton were all dominant on their way to district crowns on Saturday.
Perhaps no Trojan was more impressive than Scranton who returned to the state meet with a title at 152 pounds.
No. 10 ranked Scranton (34-11) reached the finals with a first-period pin and a 16-1 tech fall before earning a 7-2 win over seventh-ranked Jack Miller of Pleasant Valley in the title match.
A state medalist a year ago, Avila returned to state for the second straight season with a title at 145 pounds.
Sixth-ranked Avila (38-7) won a 25-10 tech fall over Clinton senior Luke Jennings in the title match.
Second-ranked Pierce (38-2) secured his first state meet appearance with a title at 106 pounds.
The freshman pinned Ethan Schlichtmann of Western Dubuque in 26 seconds in the semifinals and won the championship match via medical forfeit over Mitchell Pins of Dubuque Hempstead.
Doyle (30-17) finished third at 132 pounds.
