Wrestling Roundup: Clear Creek Amana Qualifies Eight Wrestlers for State Meet in Historic District Showing

A strong regular season for the Clear Creek Amana wrestling team was followed by a historic postseason effort by the Clippers on Saturday.
Clear Creek Amana qualified a school record eight wrestlers for the state meet on Saturday in a third-place team finish at the Class 3A, District 3 meet at Cedar Rapids Jefferson High School.
Beck Arant, Kaden Phan and Ethan Williams all finished runner-up and five other Clippers qualified for the state meet February 15-18 at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines with third-place finishes as Clear Creek Amana rolled up 149 points.
Second-ranked Waverly-Shell Rock had 10 champions and won the team title with 279.5 points while Cedar Rapids Prairie was second with 178.
Arant (32-11) went 2-1 on his way to a runner-up finish at 145 pounds.
The senior won a 5-2 decision over Ottumwa sophomore Koby Chanthalavanh in the semifinals before being pinned by top-ranked Bas Diaz of Waverly-Shell Rock in the second period in the title match.
Phan and Williams joined Arant was district runners-up.
Williams (25-14) won a 1-0 decision over Cedar Rapids Prairie junior Collin Velky in the semifinals before being pinned by second-ranked McCrae Hagarty of Waverly-Shell Rock in the 195-pound championship.
Phan (32-12) posted back-to-back pins to reach the 182-pound championship where he dropped a 9-5 decision to Waverly-Shell Rock junior Cole Thompson.
Cale Nash, Jose Mendieta, Nolan Howell, Jay Halverson and Benjamin Haughey all secured at spot at state with a third-place finish on Saturday.
A state qualifier last season as a freshman, Nash (36-6) became the eighth multi-year qualifier in program history with a third-place finish at 113 pounds.

Mendieta (18-27) was third at 120 pounds, Howell (33-16) was third at 126 and Halverson was third at 132 pounds.
Haughey (25-25) finished third at 170 pounds.
