Poynton Commits to Illinois as Preferred Walk-on

One of the top tacklers in the Your Prep Sports area has settled on a football future.
Former Regina linebacker Ronan Poynton announced his commitment to Illinois on Sunday with a post on social medial.
Poynton will join the Illini as a preferred walk-on.
“I’m proud to announce my commitment to continue my education and play football for The University of Illinois,” Poynton wrote on Twitter. “God has truly blessed me with his opportunity and without him I would not be where I am at today. Thank you to all my coaches, family and friends who have supported me along the way. Excited to start the next chapter in my life and join the family.”
The 6-foot-2, 220-pound Poynton had a team-high 67 tackles as a senior last fall including 52 solo stops while helping Regina to a 5-4 record.
Poynton also had a sack among two tackles for loss and an interception as a senior and rushed for 63 yards and two touchdowns.
As a junior Poynton had 29.5 tackles including 3.5 for loss.
