West High Wins Six Events On Its Way to District Swimming Title

West High won six events and had four runner-up finish on its way to claiming the team title at the district swimming meet in Dubuque on Saturday.
Juniors Max Gerke and Holden Carter each won a pair of individual titles and West High won a pair of relay titles as the Trojans pulled away from Cedar Falls to win the team title.
West High won the team title with 403 points while Cedar Falls was second with 382 and Dubuque Hempstead was third with 361.
Winston Fan, Ian Caballero and Lukas Swanson all added runner-up finishes as West High qualified 15 entries for the state swimming meet scheduled for February 10-11 at the University of Iowa Recreation and Wellness Center.
West High won titles in the 200 medley relay in 1:35.76 and the 400 freestyle relay in 3:13.29 and also finished third in the 200 freestyle relay in a time of 1:28.08 to qualify for the state meet.
Gerke won the 200 freestyle in 1:42.74 and added a title in the 500 freestyle in a time of 4:41.27.
Carter matched Gerke with a pair of individual titles winning the 100 butterfly in 49.89 and the 100 backstroke in 51.53.
Fan posted a pair of runner-up finishes, placing second in the 200 IM in a time of 1:58.88 and also finishing second in the100 breaststroke in 59.15.
Caballero was runner-up in the 50 freestyle in 21.71 and Swanson was runner-up in the 500 freestyle in 4:41.3.
Other state-qualifying efforts for West High came from Swanson in the 200 freestyle with a third-place finish in 1:44.44 and senior Christian Janis in the 50 freestyle who was fourth in 22.23.
Caballero qualified for the state meet with a sixth-place finish in the 100 freestyle in a time of 49.53 and Brennen Westphal placed seventh in the 100 breaststroke in 1:02.32 to earn a spot at the state meet.
