A strong start to the season for Clear Creek Amana continued on Saturday with the best performance yet from the Clippers.
Clear Creek Amana crowned four champions and had four runner-up finishes on its way to winning the team title at the Colton Allen Memorial Tournament at Mid-Prairie High School in Wellman.
“Overall, it’s a fun group to coach,” Clear Creek Amana coach Kyle Forness said. “They are all doing a good job and they all continue to improve. We are getting better each and every day.”
Cale Nash, Nolan Howell, Ryker Jones and Benjamin Haughey all won individual titles for the Clippers as Clear Creek Amana edged Benton Community by two points for the team title.
The Clippers finished with 146.5 points while Benton Community was runner-up with 144.5 and host Mid-Prairie was third with 87.
“We had guys winning the tournament and we had freshmen like Carson Bromwell and Jose Mendieta getting us big bonus points and we end up winning by two points,” Forness said. “These guys all contributed in some way.”
Nash went 2-0 with a pin and a tech fall on his way to the 113-pound title while improving his season record to 9-2.
“Cale Nash was doing Cale Nash things, he took care of business,” Forness said. “I like to see some of those falls. But he pretty much he hammered everybody and did his job.”
Howell went 4-0 with three pins on his way to the 132-pound title.
Jones won the title at 160 with three pins and a 5-4 decision over runner-up Clayton Sebetka of Benton Community in his final match.
“That’s a confidence booster, good for him,” Forness said of Jones 5-4 win. “And that kid has been working hard every single day and he’s going to get better and he’s going to be a problem for people at the end of the year.”
Sophomore Benjamin Haughey went 3-0 with a pair of first-period pins and 4-0 decision over Iowa Valley’s Colton Hudepohl on his way to the 170-pound title.
Junior Ethan Williams went 2-1 on his way to a runner-up finish at 195 pounds.
“Ben Haughey at 170 is giving up tons of weight, him and Ethan Williams at 195 are our David and Goliath, I mean, they’re given up by 13 pounds and Ethan is giving up dang near 20 pounds,” Forness said. “Ethan came through with a big pin at the end and Ben Haughey wins the tournament at 170. Both of those guys stepped up.”
Mendieta was runner-up at 120 pounds, Max Carlson was runner-up at 138 and Beck Arant was runner-up at 145.
Caden Baxter (152), Kaden Phan (182), Bronwell (220) and Vinnie Keller (285) all placed third for Clear Creek Amana.
