FORT DODGE – All Haidyn Barker needed to secure a state medal was a little bit of company.
The fourth trip to the state cross country meet for Barker was the first for the Clear Creek Amana senior as a team qualifier.
The fourth trip to state also produced the first state medal for Barker in four races at Lakeside Golf Course in Fort Dodge.
Barker closed a strong prep career with a 13th place finish at the Class 3A state meet on Saturday helping Clear Creek Amana to a top-10 team finish in its first team appearance at state since 2014.
“(Getting a medal) wasn’t even on my mind the first three years but I knew if I had my team here with me that I could do it,” Barker said. “I made it a goal this season.”
The medalist effort from Barker helped Clear Creek Amana to a ninth-place team finish with 223 points.
Pella won the 3A team title with 91 points while Ballard was runner-up with 127 points led by individual champion Peyton Noe who won in an all-time best time of 16:48.58.
Clear Creek Amana was five points behind eighth-place Glenwood and six points in front of WAMAC rival Center Point-Urbana which was 10th with 229 points.
“We came in here with two runners with state experience and we get up here and run a top-10 race,” Clear Creek Amana coach Ben Robison said. “It’s perfect for our team where we are at now and it is so much better for how we move forward.”
A state medal in her final prep race was a perfect ending for Barker.
The 13th place finish also continued a career trend of state meet improvement for the lone senior in the Clipper lineup on Saturday.
“She vocalized in the summer that she wanted to finish on the deck,” Robison said. “She ran the race that she needed to run to get there and I am glad that we can send her out on a high note.”
Barker finished 63rd as a freshman and jumped to 33rd a year later.
Her 13th place finish on Saturday came after Barker placed 20th last season in a time of 19:49.9.
In her final lap around Lakeside Golf Course Barker took more than 15 seconds off her time from a year ago finishing in 19:33.61.
“It helped a lot having my team here,” Barker said. “It just felt like another race today.”
For the first time in her career Barker had company at the state meet.
Sophomore Sara Kinzenbaw was 59th overall and 39th among team scorers in a time of 20:43.93 and Kiera Rogers placed 65th overall and 43rd in the team race in 20:52.79.
“She was a completely different kid this week going in from running as an individual to now running with a team,” Robison said. “That has been a huge bonus and a huge boost to her.”
Kira Barker was 80th in the team race in 21:01.86 and Harper Tecklenburg was 108th in 21:42.45.
“I learned a lot about the importance of the support from my teammates,” Haidyn Barker said. “I’m so proud of all of them.”
The Clear Creek Amana boys team finished 14th in the Class 3A race in its first appearance at the state meet since 2019.
Pella won the team title with 79 points while Marion was second with 113 and North Polk was third with 123.
Clear Creek Amana was led by sophomore Brock Hilsman who placed 30th in a time of 16:59.1 and finished 14th with 300 points.
“We peaked specifically for the state qualifier,” Robison said. “This was a bonus meet for us and the kids ran really hard races for them but what this is going to do for our program moving forward is invaluable.”
