MANCHESTER – Cross country is a sport measured by time.
When it comes to state qualifying meets times go out the window and placing positions become the priority.
Solon didn’t have its best day according to times on Wednesday but the Spartans did more than enough to return to the state cross country meet.
Class 3A No. 10 Solon had all five scorers in the top 25 on its way to a runner-up finish at the state qualifying meet at Hart Ridge Golf Course in Manchester.
“That is what we talked about is time doesn’t matter any more it’s just every person you can pass, every place you can get is what matters and you are running for a team,” Solon coach Emy Williams said. “Now it’s running for your team and I think they really showed that today.”
Mike Yeomans and Brick Kabela each posted top-11 finishes as Solon had four runners finish in the top 20.
Yeomans finished sixth in 16:46.58 and Kabela was 11th in 17:09.42 as the Spartans finished with 52 points.
Fifth-ranked Marion had the top two finishers led by individual champion Jedidiah Osgood and won the team title with 52 points.
“It feels really good that we qualified as a team,” Yeomans said. “That was certainly our goal.”
Yeomans and Kabela led the way but they were backed up by a strong performance from the Spartans trail pack.
Junior Grant Bumsted was 17th in 17:17.48 and classmate Lawsin Sinwell was 20th in 17:23.92.
“Our pack was a little closer today and that’s what we did two years ago when we got state runner-up,” Yeoman said. “We worked on that in practice a little bit and it definitely helped today.”
Sophomore Evan Burg was the fifth runner for the Spartans placing 25th in a time of 17:29.77.
“We had some other runners step up,” Williams said. “Evan Burg and Lawsin Sinnwell had great races and really stepped up and that’s the things you are looking for on a day like today.”
