CEDAR RAPIDS – Last Thursday Ford Washburn shattered the City High school record by more than 20 seconds at the Bud Williams Invitational.
A week later Washburn took a little more time off the best performance in program history.
Washburn set a new personal best and a Seminole Valley Park record while winning the Mississippi Valley Conference Super Meet title in Cedar Rapids.
“It’s a really big deal,” Washburn said. “I am super happy to have run so fast and I am so grateful to everyone that has helped me get here. My coaches are why I run so fast, my teammates and coaches.”
Washburn broke the City High all-time mark by 22 seconds a week ago with a time of 14:50.58.
The senior standout shaved nearly a tenth of a second off that time on Thursday winning in 14:50.49.
Washburn’s winning time broke the Seminole Valley Park course record set two weeks ago by Jedidiah Osgood of Marion by more than 12 seconds.
“My coach has been telling me all week that this is a fast course and I could run fast here,” Washburn said. “He has been motivating me and telling me I could do it. I’ve run here before so I knew I could do it.”
The individual title from Washburn helped City High claim its second consecutive Super meet title.
After winning the team title by a single point last season, City High put four runners in the top 12 and finished with 51 points, 26 in front of runner-up Cedar Falls.
“We’ve had a couple of rough races but together we talked about how this is the time to drop our milage and really start going after these meets,” City High senior Truman Thompson said. “It call came together really well for us.”
Washburn led the way on Thursday pulling away from Cedar Rapids Kennedy’s Miles Wilson and Western Dubuque’s Isaiah Hammerand over the final mile.
A nearly eight-second cushion for Washburn at the two-mile mark ballooned to nearly 30 seconds over the final mile.
Wilson was runner-up in 15:20.48 and Hammerand third in 15:33.41.
“I was really just trying to dig deep and push for the last quarter mile,” Washburn said. “I tried to finish it out.”
Thompson joined Washburn in the top 10 finishing fifth in a time of 15:35.11.
“I felt really awesome,” Thompson said. “I have had a couple of bad races the last two or three races and I just got over some sickness and it really all went really well for me today.”
Seniors Ammon Smith and Noah Carey were 11th and 12th respectively.
Smith finished in 15:55.95 while Carey crossed the finish line in 15:56.37.
“We were just talking before the race how our 2-3-4 is different every race and how we need to pack up and really push it,” Thompson said. “I think we did that really well at the beginning and it set us up really well for a great race.”
