IOWA CITY – Running against fast runners will make you run faster.
That was the takeaway for the Clear Creek Amana cross country team from its sixth-place finish at last week’s Eastern Iowa Classic filled with ranked 4A teams and defending 3A runner-up Marion.
“That was a good opportunity for us to race against people that we knew were going to be fast,” Clear Creek Amana senior Peyton Stadler said of last week’s race in Cedar Rapids. “We knew walking into that meet it was going to be a fast race and we wanted to use that as a chance to really push that last mile and see what we could do.”
On Monday the Clippers learned when the fast runners you are running against are your teammates you are pushed to go even faster.
Class 3A No. 13 Clear Creek Amana put on a pack running clinic on Monday at its own Clipper Cross Country Classic at Kickers Soccer Complex.
The Clippers had eight of the top 10 individual finishers and strolled to the team title with 23 points to easily outdistance 2A No. 12 Mid-Prairie which finished runner-up with 47.
“I think it’s something special to run against your teammates like that,” Stadler said. “There is nothing more intimate than trying to pass your own teammate or trying to race against your own teammate compared so someone else so it just pushes us to go faster and it makes us closer when we all get to finish together.”
Mid-Prairie sophomore Emmett Swartzentruber won the individual title in 17:33.58 and teammate Preston Yutzy was fourth in 18:18.41.
The rest of the top 10 finishers were Clippers led by runner-up Brock Hilsman in a time of 17:48.72 and Stadler who was third in 17:50.68.
“When we get together I feel like we move faster and we push each other,” Hilsman said. “At some point in the race someone will feel good, they will push ahead and you will try to stay with them and that helps you with your times.”
Thomas Stiltner was fifth in 18:36.13, Jamie Hayes was sixth in 18:40.7 and Isaac Sorensen was seventh in 18:40.95.
Cash Jensen was eighth in 18:46.93, Noah Yost ninth in 18:47.46 and Will Swift 11th in 18:48.05.
Clear Creek Amana also had runners finish 11th and 14th.
“We have not had a meet yet where we had the same one through seven,” Clear Creek Amana coach Ben Robison said. “From about four to about 10 it could be any guy on a given day. It’s a good situation to be in.”
The Clear Creek Amana girls team had its own impressive performance on Monday finishing runner-up to Class 2A second-ranked Mid-Prairie.
Clear Creek Amana and Mid-Prairie each finished with 33 points with the Golden Hawks winning the team title via tie breaker.
“I don’t think the results from the past few weeks have done justice as to what the girls have accomplished,” Robison said. “I think they are in the trenches killing it and I think our number five is going to be back in the next week or so and things should really start to hum along.”
Haidyn Barker finished runner-up to Mid-Prairie defending 2A state champion Danielle Hostetler who won the individual title in 18:42.15.
Barker finish in 20:29.42 to lead four Clear Creek Amana runners in the top 10.
“She is just super consistent,” Robison said of Barker. “Even in her improvement she is consistent and she has really come out of her shell and started to blossom and that has made a huge difference in how she competes and gets after it.”
Sophomore Kira Barker was fifth in 21:31.62, junior Kiera Rogers was sixth in 21:32.3 and sophomore Sara Kinzenbaw was eighth in 22:06.91.
