Class 2A Top-Ranked Williamsburg Pulls Away From Solon in Second Half

Solon had its opportunities early against Class 2A top-ranked Williamsburg.
It was the Raiders that made the plays late.
Williamsburg broke open a one-score game with a pair of third-quarter touchdowns and held on for a 38-25 win over Class 3A seventh-ranked Solon on Friday in a non-district matchup in Williamsburg.
The loss was the second straight for the Spartans and dropped Solon to 1-2 on the season while Williamsburg improved to 3-0 with its third consecutive win over a ranked opponent.
Williamsburg senior quarterback Carson Huedepohl accounted for five touchdowns, throwing for three scores and running for two more as the Raiders overcame four turnovers to stay perfect.
Solon led 6-0 after a pair of Grant Knipper field goals in the first quarter but Huedepohl gave Williamsburg the lead for good with a 5-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.
Clayten Steckly returned an interception 48 yards for a touchdown and Huedepohl tossed a 10-yard scoring strike to Iowa recruit Derek Weisskopf to give the Raiders a 18-12 halftime lead.
Williamsburg pushed the lead to 13-12 on a 13-yard pass from Huedepohl to Steckly and an 8-yard scoring strike to Weisskopf in the third quarter.
Solon made a charge late as Brett White ripped off an 84-yard touchdown run and Blake Timmons scored on a 2-yard run but Huedepohl added a 15-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to help secure the win.
White finished with 149 rushing yards on nine carries as Solon racked up 161 rushing yards and outgained the Raiders 305-259.
Timmons completed 12-of-29 passes for 144 yards to go with his rushing touchdown with Ryan Rasmussen catching four passes for 50 yards and Oaken Foster making four receptions for 49 yards.
Huedepohl passed for 149 yards and Gable Dayton ran for 62 yards to lead Williamsburg.
White led Solon with eight tackles and a sack while Austin Bell had four tackles including a tackle for loss for the Spartans.
Sean Stahle and Quinton Heineman each had an interception for Solon.
Solon will host 3A ninth-ranked Davenport Assumption (1-2) in its non-district finale next Friday.
