Over the past three seasons Liberty High has established itself as one of the premier programs in the state winning 92 matches and advancing to the state tournament each of the past three seasons.

The Lightning open the 2022 season among the favorites to claim the Class 5A title.

Liberty High is No. 1 in the Class 5A preseason rankings released by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union on Monday leading Cedar Falls, Pleasant Valley, Johnston and Ankeny in the 5A top-five.

Liberty High went 34-5 last season falling to Johnston in the 5A state quarterfinals.

City High (20-15) is No. 15 in the preseason rankings one spot behind its season-opening opponent Cedar Rapids Kennedy.

Clear Creek Amana (27-12) is seventh in the Class 4A preseason poll while WAMAC rival Marion is the top-ranked team in Class 4A.

Other top-ranked teams include Mount Vernon (3A), Dike-New Hartford (2A) and Fort Madison Holy Trinity (1A).
