Substate Baseball Roundup: City High Advances to Substate Title Game With 5-0 Win Over Muscatine

Second-ranked City High took care of business in its playoff opener on Friday evening.
Now the Little Hawks need just one win to secure a second trip to the state tournament in the past three seasons.
Cade Obermueller struck out 14 in six shutout innings as Class 4A, second-ranked City High downed Muscatine 5-0 in a Substate 6 quarterfinal at Mercer Park.
Obermueller fanned the first seven batters he faced on Friday and allowed just three hits as top-seeded City High advanced to the Substate 6 title game.
City High will host the winner of Monday’s semifinal between North Scott (24-15) and Bettendorf (14-20) in the Substate 6 championship on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Mercer Park.
North Scott defeated Davenport North 9-1 in its quarterfinal on Friday while Bettendorf won 3-1 over third-seeded Burlington.
City High was impressive on Friday behind the pitching of Obermueller.
The Little Hawks snapped a scoreless tie with three runs in the bottom of the third inning with the big hit a two-run single by Alex Knudtson.
Knudtson went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored on Friday to lead the Little Hawks while Joey Bouska had a hit, drove in a run and scored a run.
Gable Mitchell had a hit and scored a run while sophomore Sam Kueter doubled and scored a run and Grant Ernst had a hit and drove in a run for City High.
