City High got a pair of stellar efforts from starting pitchers on Monday in sweep of cross-town rival West High in a Mississippi Valley Conference cross-divisional doubleheader at Mercer Park in Iowa City.

Class 4A fourth-ranked City High won game one 8-1 and completed the sweep with a 6-2 win in the nightcap.

Alex Knudtson tossed a one-hitter in the opener and Jay Kennedy allowed just a pair of hits in 4 2/3 shutout innings in the nightcap as City High improved to 24-8 on the season and 19-7 in MVC play.

Knudtson allowed just one hit and one unearned run in a complete game in the opener, walking two and striking out seven.

City High scored twice in the first inning and broke the game open with five runs in the fifth.

Joey Bouska went 3-for-3 with two runs while Gable Mitchell was 2-for-4 with a home run, three runs scored and two RBI to lead the Little Hawks.

Knudtson was 2-for-3 with a triple and drove in four runs in the game one win while Drew Carlson and Drew Larson each had a hit and scored a run and Ty Hall had a hit and drove in two.

Noah DeSaulniers had a hit and Nathan Stephens scored a run for West High.

Kennedy tossed 4 and 1/3 scoreless innings in game two allowing just two hits while walking three and striking out eight.

Bouska went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI while Talon Young doubled and drove in two runs for the Little Hawks.

Drew Carlson and Isaiah Svoboda each had a hit, drove in a run and scored a run for the Little Hawks in game two.

Carter Freidhof had a hit and scored a run for Wet High while Cade Adkins, and Jacob Koch each added hits for the Trojans.

Stehpens and Freidhof each scored runs for West High.

DeSaulniers took the loss in game two allowing five runs on five hits while walking five and striking out three in four innings.
