Liberty High and Dubuque Hempstead split a Mississippi Valley Conference cross-divisional doubleheader between top-15 teams on Thursday in Dubuque.

Class 5A No. 13 Dubuque Hempstead won the opener 5-1 and No. 10 Liberty High rallied for a 10-7 win in the nightcap to salvage the split.

Liberty High improved to 20-4 on the season and 14-2 in MVC play while Dubuque Hempstead moved to 16-2 on the year and 14-2 in conference games.

Liberty High had seven hits in the opener but could only score one run against Hempstead sophomore Kenzie Tomkins who earned the win striking out two and walking one.

Seven different Liberty High players had a hit in the opener with Ava Donnelly going 1-for-2 with a walk and a run scored and Ella McLaughlin going 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Ella Wetjen and Kennedy Daugherty each had a double in game one and Brynlee Slockett, Haley Schroeder and Kinsley Robertson added hits.

Robertson took the loss allowing five runs on 10 hits while striking out seven and walking five.

Liberty High overcame an early 5-0 deficit in the nightcap with four runs in the fourth and six more in the fifth to earn the split.

Daugherty went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a home run and four RBI to lead Liberty High while Mischa Reiners was 2-for-4 with a double, a home run, two runs scored and an RBI.

Robertson had two hits, scored twice and drove in a run, Ella Kate Fort was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI and Haileigh Smith had a hit, scored a run and drove in a run.

Schroeder had a double and scored twice and Slockett had a hit and scored a run.

Daugherty earned the win allowing seven runs, six earned, on nine hits while striking out two and walking four.
