West Branch Sixth After Opening Day at Class 1A State Golf Meet

West Branch shot a 395 on the opening day of the Class 1A state golf meet on Thursday at American Legion Golf Course in Marshalltown and is sixth-place after 18 holes.
Claire Jarrett fired a 41 on the back nine to shoot an opening-day 87 to lead the Bears and is tied for 11th after the opening day of the two-day meet.
Algona Garrigan leads the team race with an opening-round 361 while Grundy Center is second with a 367 and Central Lyon is third with a 376.
West branch is three strokes in front of Akron-Westfield which is in seventh with a 398.
Jarrett led a trio of West Branch golfers to shoot better than 100 on Thursday.
Sophia Kouba shot a 93 while Alex Poppen had a 44 on the back nine to close with a 96.
Play continues at the 1A state meet on Friday morning.
