Solon went more than a decade without earning hardware at the state golf tournament following the program first ever runner-up finish in 2007.

The Spartans didn’t have to wait nearly as long for a trophy after its second runner-up effort.

Solon finished runner-up at the Class 3A state golf meet for the second consecutive season on Tuesday posting a two-day score of 654.

The Spartans shot a 328 on Tuesday and finished 21 strokes behind team champion Gilbert who won the 3A title for the second straight season.

Gilbert won the 2021 title by 29 strokes over Solon and led by 12 strokes after shooting an opening-round 314 on Monday.

The Tigers posted the lowest score for the second consecutive day on Tuesday with a 319 to secure the team title.

Solon was led by senior Frank Haege Jr. who finished third overall with a 36-hole total of 153.

Haege closed with a 78 on Tuesday after an opening-round 75 to finish one stroke in front of Evan Smith of Knoxville and Gilbert’s Spencer Clatt.

Waverly-Shell Rock senior Hogan Hansen won the individual title for the second straight season firing a five-under-par 139 to finish 10 strokes in front of runner-up Will Simpson of Pella.

Solon Freshman Isaiah Zoske earned a top-15 finish in his state meet debut shooting a 79 on Tuesday to finish with a two-day total of 161.

Jack McCarty shot an 83 on Tuesday and finished with a 168 for the Spartans while Mac McCarty carded an 88 Tuesday and finished with a 172.
