Solon Second After Opening Round at Class 3A State Golf Meet

For the second consecutive season the Class 3A state golf title is shaping up as a two-team race between Gilbert and Solon.
Defending state champion Gilbert fired an opening-round 314 on Monday at Veenker Memorial Golf Course in Ames to take a 12-stroke lead over Solon on the first day of the 3A state tournament.
The 2021 runner-up, Solon shot a 326 on Monday and enters the final day of competition on Tuesday with a 13-stroke lead over third place Knoxville.
ADM is fourth with a 342 after one round while Pella is fifth with a 347.
Senior Frank Haege Jr. shot an opening-round 75 to lead Solon and is tied for third with Gilbert senior Sawyer Hansen in the individual standings.
Haege Jr. is one stroke back of second place Evan Smith from Knoxville and six strokes back of leader and defending state champion Hogan Hansen of Waverly-Shell Rock who opened with a three-under-par 69.
Haege Jr. had three birdies while shooting a 37 on the front nine and closed with one birdie and three bogeys while posting a 38 on the back.
Haege was one of four Spartans to shoot 85 or better on Monday.
Freshman Isaiah Zoske shot a 39 on the back nine to finish with an 82 and sits in 15th place after 18 holes.
Mac McCarty shot an 84 for the Spartans and Jack McCarty finished with an 85 after shooting even-par 36 on the back nine.
