Nearly every coach across essentially every sport likes to talk about playing the best in the biggest moments.
It is tough to imagine a team doing that any better than Solon did on Wednesday afternoon.
Five of six Solon golfers produced personal best scores as the Spartans qualified for the state tournament for the first time since 1998 with a runner-up finish at the Class 3A, Region 4 meet at Brown Deer Golf Club in Coralville.
“I couldn’t be prouder of these girls,” Solon coach Curtis Hendrickson said. “They committed right after our last meet last year, many of them playing golf in the summer to improve. They endured horrible conditions at practice all year and put in extra time to prepare for the regional.”
Solon shot a 382 to edge Central DeWitt by a single stroke for runner-up and the second state tournament bid.
Dubuque Wahlert won the team title with a 371.
Solon will compete at the Class 3A state tournament on May 26 and 27 at River Valley Golf Course in Adel.
Junior Taylor Dee shot a career-best 87 to finish third overall on Wednesday behind individual champion Meera Julka of Cedar Rapids Xavier and Central DeWitt’s Anna Hurning.
Senior Camryn Keith added a personal best score of 92 to place sixth overall.
Lilly Houtakker fired a 101 for Solon while Peyton Pentico was one shot back with a career-best 102.
Rylie Greazel (105) and Izzy Messenger (107) also carded career-low scores for the Spartans.
Clear Creek Amana placed fourth with a 397.
