Defending 3A Runner-up Solon Makes Statement While Winning Sectional Title
Your Prep Sports
Returning a strong core from a team that finished runner-up at the Class 3A state meet last season put Solon in the conversation as a title contender to open the season.
An emphatic win last week at its own invitational that included defending state champion Gilbert made the Spartans a favorite in a strong 3A field.
Solon showed in its postseason opener on Wednesday it deserves that distinction.
All five six Spartans shot 83 or lower on Wednesday as Solon fired a 293 to run away with the team title at the Class 3A sectional meet at Scheaffer Memorial Golf Course in Fort Madison.
Mac McCarty shot a one-over-par 71 to earn medalist honors and lead a trio of Spartans to finish in the top six as Solon advanced to the 3A District meet on Monday at Wildcat Golf Course in Shellsburg.
Freshman Isaiah Zoske fired a 73 to finish fourth for Solon while Jack McCarty was just one shot back in sixth place with a 74.
Frank Haege Jr. shot a 75 to place ninth for the Spartans while Nate Miller carded an 82 and Brennan Heesch an 83 for Solon.
Zach McCarty shot a 75 to finish seventh helping Clear Creek Amana to a third-place finish with a score of 329.
Washington was runner-up with a 325.
