SOLON – After four years of high school golf meets Camryn Keith has grown accustomed to being along on the course outside of her playing partners.
In the final home meet of her career Keith on Monday was joined by some familiar faces and provided her fans something to cheer for.
Keith shot a 93 to finish sixth overall while helping Solon to a third-place team finish at the WAMAC Super Meet on a warm and windy afternoon at Saddleback Ridge Golf Course in Solon.
“I had a couple people come watch me today for a few holes that have never come watch me before,” Keith said. “It’s fun to be able to get more people to come support and play your own home course which is always more fun than going somewhere else.”
Keith led a trio of Spartans to finish in the top 15 on Monday as the Spartans shot a 392 as a team.
West Delaware won the team title with a 373 while Williamsburg used an individual title from Teagan Schaefer to finish runner-up with a 382.
Junior Lilly Houtakker shot a 98 to finish 12th and Taylor Dee was 14th with a 99 as Solon finished 10 strokes back of the Raiders in third.
Clear Creek Amana was sixth with a 417.
“For today’s wind the scores were really good,” Solon coach Curtis Hendrickson said. “They just had to grind all day and keeping being really tough so I am proud of them.”
Playing at home brought Solon a few advantages on Monday.
First and foremost the Spartans had a knowledge of the course after practicing and playing at Saddleback Ridge for the past several months.
“We have gotten to practice here a lot so we know exactly what to hit,” Houtakker said. “It’s a lot easier to play a course that you know really well so that helped us today.”
Equally important for the Spartans on Monday was the support of those that came to watch.
For Solon seniors Keith and Izzy Messenger that support didn’t go unnoticed.
“It’s special,” Keith said. “It means a lot to be able to have people watch you play.”
Led by Keith the Spartans performed well.
Keith shot a 46 on the front nine and a 47 on the back to finish six strokes back of Schaefer.
“Hitting with the win was kind of fun,” Keith said. “Putting was really tough but I feel like I did decent with it and my iron shots were pretty good too.”
Houtakker shot a 47 on the front nine and a 51 on the back on her way to a 12th place finish.
Dee shot a 43 on the front and a 56 on the back nine and finished with a 99 while placing 14th on a day where the wind was consistent and temperatures climbed into the upper 80s.
“The wind was rough,” Dee said. “You just had to push through it and then the heat made it rough as we aren’t really used to that yet.”
Rylie Greazel and Peyton Pentico each shot 102 and Messenger a 115 for the Spartans which had a significant showing of fans for what was a home meet.
“Saddleback has just been awesome this year and every home meet we have there have been a lot of people out here following,” Hendricksen said. “That’s kind of the culture that we’ve been working to create for a while and it’s finally taking seed.”
Solon will now turn it’s attention to earning a spot at the state meet.
The Spartans will compete in the Class 3A, Region 5 meet on May 18 at Brown Deer Golf Course in Coralville.
“Really, we just focus one meet at a time,” Keith said. “We’ve certainly talked about next week and we know we have all played that course before so we feel pretty good going into it and hopefully we come out good.”
Clear Creek Amana got an eighth-place finish from Meg Berkland who shot a 47 on the front and a 49 on the back nine to finish with a 96.
