City High has its sights set on closing the season by winning three consecutive meets in May.

The Little Hawks checked off the first of those boxes on Thursday.

City High won seven events and finished second in three others on its way to winning the team title at the Mississippi Valley Conference Mississippi Division meet at Kingston Stadium in Cedar Rapids.

Ford Washburn won titles in the 1,600 and 3,200 on his way to being named Mississippi Division athlete of the year as City High rolled up 145 team points.

Linn-Mar was runner-up wit 115 points followed by Cedar Falls with 108 and Liberty High with 107.5.

Washburn won the 1,600 in 4:24.75 and added a title in the 3,200 in a time of 9:41.51 as City High won six individual titles.

Matt Schaeckenbach cleared 6-2 to win the high jump and also won the 400 hudles in a time of 56.02 while TaeShon McDaniels won the shot put with a toss of 54-6 ¾.

Ammon Smith won the 800 in 1:55.03 and joined Truman Thompson, Ayman Noreldaim, Patrick Sarsfield on the Little Hawks 4×800 relay team that won in 8:09.5.

Schaeckenbach added a runner-up finish in the 110 hurdles in a big day for the junior and McDaniels was runner-up in the discus.

City High was runner-up in the 4×400 relay and third in the shuttle hurdle relay.

Liberty High got titles from Luke Meyers in the 400 (50.09) and Eric Lucas in the 110 hurdles (14.92) on its way to a fourth-place team finish.

Meyers added runner-up finishes in both the 100 and 200 and was fourth in the long jump to lead the Lightning.

Gavin Keeney was runner-up in the 800 and Liberty High was second in the shuttle hurdle relay.
