City High, West High With Strong Saturday Showings at Drake Relays

Both City High and West High have their sites set on doing big things when they return to Drake Stadium for the state track and field meet in three weeks.
On the final day of the Drake Relays on Saturday those two showed exactly why they are so bullish about their potential in May.
City High and West High each had three top eight finishes on Saturday on the final day of the Drake Relays on a chilly afternoon in Des Moines.
West High got a sixth-place finish from Aidan Jacobsen in the 400 hurdles, an eighth-place effort from senior Alex Mckane in the 1,600 and was third in the 4×100 relay on Saturday.
City High closed a strong weekend with a seventh-place finish from Matt Schaeckenbach in the 400 hurdles, a third-place performance from Ford Washburn in the 1,600 and a fourth-place finish in the 4×800 relay.
The Little Hawks finished third in the Drake Relays Cup standings with 15 points behind champion Johnston and Ankeny which each had 17.
Washburn joined Ammon Smith, Sam Schaefer and Patrick Sarsfield on the City High 4×800 squad that was fourth in 8:02.52 and capped a strong individual Drake Relays with a third-place finish in the 1,600.
Washburn finished in 4:17.9 while Dallas Center-Grimes senior Aidan Ramsey completed a weekend sweep of the distance events winning in 4:15.96.
The 800 meter champion Jackson Mace-Maynard of Newton was runner-up in 4:16.27.
West High had its best finish of the weekend in the 4×100 with the squad of Todd Rent, Izaiah Loveless, Nate Gudenkauf and Christian Janis finished third in a time of 42.94.
Southeast Polk won the 4×100 title in 42.0 while Ankeny was runner-up in 42.6.
Jacobsen placed sixth in the 400 hurdles for the Trojans in a time of 55.12 while McKane was eighth in the 1,600 in 4:22.69.
The Clear Creek Amana shuttle hurdle relay team of Ben Swails, Marcus Lang, Andrew Schlemme and Harrison Rosenberg was fifth in 1:00.64.
