City High Junior Washburn Cracks 9-Minute Mark in Drake Relays 3,200 Runner-up Effort

In his last competition Ford Washburn turned in a historic performance winning a pair of individual titles and setting a school record in the process at the Forwald Relays.
One week later Washburn was back at it on the state’s biggest stage.
Washburn finished runner-up in the 3,200 at the Drake Relays on Thursday clocking the second fastest time in City High history at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
Dallas Center-Grimes senior Aidan Ramsey won the 3,200 title in a Drake Relays record time of 8:58.27 with Washburn right behind in a time of 8:59.6.
Washburn closed with a 59.5 final 400 meters to clock the second-fastest time in City High history for the second consecutive meet.
His previous career best time came for Washburn was the 9:15.9 he ran last week at the Forwald Relays at City High.
Ramsey and Washburn became the fifth and sixth runners in state history to break the nine-minute barrier in the 3,200.
The winning time for Ramsey put him number four on the all-time list while the 8:59.6 for Washburn is the sixth fastest in state history.
West High senior Alex McKane finished seventh in a time of 9:11.41 as the top six finishers all ran 9:10.72 or faster.
West Des Moines Dowling junior Jackson Heidesch entered with the fastest time in the state this spring at 9:05.8 finished third in 9:01.29.
City High junior Truman Thompson finished 21st in a time of 9:52.67.
City High’s TaeShon McDaniels was 17th in the discus with a toss of 150-5 while Ronnie Major was 17th in the long jump for the Little Hawks.
Clear Creek Amana senior Ben Swails finished 16th in the long jump with a mark of 20-9 and West High sophomore Aidan Jacobsen was 20th with a leap of 20-6.
