Some windy weather couldn’t stop City High from opening the season with an impressive performance that produced a team win on Friday.

City High won seven events won its way to claiming the team title at the Steve Roth Relays at Case Field on a windy and chilly evening in Washington.

The Little Hawks finished with 161 points, 11 more than runner-up Mediapolis while West High finished eighth with 88 points.

City High had had five different individuals win events and claimed titles in both the 4×200 and 4×00 relays on its way to the team title.

Taeshon McDaniels won the shot put with a toss of 52-5 and Matt Schaeckenbach won the high jump by clearing 6-0 on his way to posting four top two-finishes.

Schaeckenbach was runner-up in both the 100 hurdles (15.58) and the 400 hurdles (57.19) and was on the City High shuttle hurdle relay team that finished runner-up.

Ammon Smith won the 800 in 1:57.94 and Jovan Harris won the 400 hurdles in a time of 56.39.

The Little Hawks finished first and second in the 1,600 with Ford Washburn winning in 4:23.67 and Truman Thompson was runner-up in 4:31.72.

The City High 4×200 relay team of Sam Rew, Akili Mattox, Harris and Carsen Newton won in 1:33.84 and the foursome of Smith, Phillip Kaplan, Mattox and Thompson won the 4×400 in 3:35.16.

City High was also runner-up in the 4×800 relay.

West High was led by Christian Janis who was runner-up in the 200 in a time of 24.33 and was a part of the Trojan’s runner-up 4×100 relay team.

Alex McKane was runner-up in the 800 in 2:01.58 for West High.
