DES MOINES – All season long Panorama has been effective at taking the ball away from opponents.
The 2A leader in steals this season Panorama followed that same formula to its first state tournament win on Tuesday.
Fourth-ranked Panorama had 10 steals and forced Regina into 19 total turnovers in a 46-38 win over the Regals in a Class 2A state quarterfinal at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
“They are just super active,” Regina coach Mary Rogers said of Panorama. “They are always active, they were all over the place. They are super in your face, they know what they are doing they are coached very well.”
Sixth-ranked Regina cut an 11-point halftime deficit to four points in the final three minutes but could get no closer as Panorama rattled off the next seven points.
Panorama (25-1) will face top-ranked Dike-New Hartford in the 2A semifinals on Friday at 10 a.m.
Regina closed the season 20-5.
“They were scrappy, we knew they were,” Rogers said. “As we watched film we knew it was going to be a super even game and it actually held true. We battled, we fought, we tried and I am super proud of them.”
Regina led 15-13 after Grace Gaarde hit a pair of free throws with 4:24 left in the second quarter but Panorama went on an 11-0 run to take a 24-15 lead it would never give up.
The Panthers led 26-21 and built the lead to 39-28 with 4:52 remaining before a late Regina charge.
“I think they came out hard and were aggressive,” Regina senior Lily Simpson said. “They were getting hands on the ball all game and I feel like at points we were able to handle and at other points we didn’t handle it very well.”
After shooting 47 percent from the field in the opening half Regina shot 27 percent over the final two quarters, including just 2-of-14 in the third quarter.
Regina shot 36 percent for the game and was 4-of-21 from three-point range.
“Our shots this game weren’t falling as well as they normally are and that hurt,” Gaarde said. “We tried our best, we tried getting to the line but it just didn’t work out.”
Panorama played a part in the Regina offensive struggles.
The Panthers adjusted their zone defense after halftime to take away the paint and Regina went 1-of-8 from three-point range in the third quarter.
“At halftime we talked about the fact they were getting a majority of their points in the paint so we talked about our zone and not getting spread out and really pinching the paint,” Panorama coach Kylee Boettcher said. “That was our key focus.”
Then there were the turnovers.
Regina finished with 19, 10 of which were Panther steals including five from sophomore Jaidyn Sellers.
“They are just a really scrappy team and they were all over the place,” Gaarde said. “They are good and they are aggressive.”
Senior guard Payton Beckman had 11 of her game-high 20 points in the second half for Panorama.
She scored four points in a 7-0 Panther spurt after Regina had cut the lead to 41-35 with 2:36 remaining.
The win was the first for the Panthers in seven trips to the state tournament.
“It feels amazing,” Beckman said. “We are the first Panorama team to win a game at state so that makes it that much better.”
Simpson had 10 points and eight rebounds for Regina while fellow senior Alli Dillon had eight points and six rebounds.
Alli Clark had six points and six rebounds.
“This is just a fun experience,” Rogers said. “The experience alone is one that they will always remember. This year was one for the books for sure. For as long as I coach this will be one I remember.”
