Girls Basketball Roundup: West High Comes Up Short of State Tournament Return With Loss at No. 7 West Des Moines Valley

A cold shooting night on Wednesday left West High one win shy of a return trip to the state tournament.
Class 5A eighth-ranked West High shot 23 percent from the floor in a 50-30 loss to seventh-ranked West Des Moines Valley in the Class 5A, Region 8 title game in West Des Moines.
The win was the fifth straight for West Des Moines Valley (18-5) and sends the Tigers to the state tournament for the first time since they won the 5A crown in 2019.
West High (19-4) had a seven-game winning streak snapped with the regional final loss and will miss the state tournament for just the third time in the last six seasons.
West Des Moines Valley had three players in double figures led by Meredith Rieker and Elise Jaeger who each scored 14 points.
Maddie Brown added 11 for the Tigers.
Meanwhile, West High had a hard time getting shots to fall.
The Trojans were just 8-of-35 from the field including 2-of-16 from beyond the three-point line.
Anna Prouty led West High with 12 points and five rebounds while Meena Tate had eight points and four rebounds.
Melae’ Lacy grabbed eight rebounds for West High and Lucy Wolf had three points, three rebounds and a pair of steals.
