Wrestling Roundup: West High Crowns 5 Champions, Qualifies Eight For State at District 2 Meet

Last season West High sent eight wrestlers to the state meet, racked up 82 points and finished eighth in Class 3A.
On Saturday the Trojans matched the eight state qualifiers from a year ago.
Now the focus becomes improving on those other two areas beginning next Thursday at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
Class 3A tenth-ranked West High crowned five champions and had three runner-up finishes on Saturday at the Class 3A, District 2 meet at Cedar Rapids Jefferson.
Seniors Grant O’Dell, Robert Avila, Hunter Garvin and Kael Scranton and sophomore Braden Doyle all won individual titles on Saturday as West High finished runner-up to Linn-Mar in the team standings with 212 points.
Two-time state champion Hunter Garvin (44-0) remained unbeaten on the season while qualifying for the state meet for the fourth time.
Garvin pinned his way to the 152-pound title with three consecutive first-period falls including a pin of Western Dubuque senior Trayton Kurimski (31-13) in 57 seconds in the championship.
Seventh-ranked O’Dell (39-5) pinned his way through the 138-pound bracket winning the district title with a pin of Linn-Mar junior Austin Vandersee in 2:43 in the championship.
Second-ranked Avila (11-1) posted a pair of first-period wins before earning a 14-5 major decision over sixth-ranked Grant Kress (33-4) on Linn-Mar in the 145-pound championship match.
Scranton (27-11) needed two pins to win the 160-pound title, pinning Rason Jennings of Cedar Rapids Kennedy in 3:22 in the title match.
Doyle was the first individual champ for the Trojans on Saturday winning the 113-pound title with an 11-2 major decision over Linn-Mar sophomore Nate Fish.
Kyler Scranton, Sterling Warren and Justin Avila all advanced to the state meet with runner-up finishes.
Warren (18-20) was runner-up at 120 pounds, falling to Keaton Williams of Linn-Mar 8-3 in the championship match.
Kyler Scranton (26-14) fell to third-ranked Kane Naaktgebor of Linn-Mar in the semifinals but responded with back-to-back wins to secure a spot at state.
Scranton pinned No. 11 Nick Foreman of Cedar Rapids Washington in 1:35 in the wrestle back match to earn the runner-up finish.
No. 12 Justin Avila (26-10) fell to top-ranked Tate Naaktgeboren of Linn-Mar in the 170-pound title match but advanced to state with the runner-up finish.
Clear Creek Amana freshman Cale Nash (36-9) earned a trip to state with a runner-up finish at 106 pounds.
Nash fell to Linn-Mar freshman Malik DeBow 7-1 in the championship match.
