The string of consecutive seasons without a state qualifier for West Branch came to an end on Saturday.

Sophomores Logan Wright and Lincoln Edwards made sure of that.

Wright claimed a district title and Edwards added a runner-up finish at the Class 1A, District 1 Meet at Cascade on Saturday as West Branch qualified multiple wrestlers for the state meet for the first time since 2014.

Ninth-ranked Wright (44-6) won the 220-pound title and Edwards (29-4) was runner-up at 113 pounds as both secured their first trips to the state meet.

Wright won a thriller over eighth-ranked Maquoketa Valley sophomore Brady Davis in the semifinals.

Leading 1-0 after two periods Wright used a takedown and a pair of nearfall points to pull out a 5-4 win over Davis (36-5).

Wright then locked up the district title and a spot at state with a second-period pin of Cascade junior Cade Rausch (32-18) in the final.

Fifth-ranked Edwards earned his trip to Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines with a runner-up finish.

Edwards needed just 28 seconds to pin Dyersville Beckman sophomore Jake Schmidt in the opener before falling to fourth-ranked Brody Brisker (45-1) of Wilton via fall in the final.

It was the third win for Brisker over Edwards this season and second in as many weeks after Brisker won by fall at the sectional meet last week.

The Class 1A state meet will begin next Thursday at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
