Waikel Gets Redemption as Regina Has Strong Day At Sectional Meet

Advancing to the district meet is nothing new for Christopher Waikel.
It was the way that Waikel secured a spot at districts that had the Regina junior fired up on Saturday.
Waikel used a late reversal to reverse the outcome of his district meeting with Lisbon senior Jamien Moore at the Class 1A, Sectional 13 meet at English Valleys.
A year after losing a 10-0 major decision to Moore in the district semifinals on his way to an 0-2 district performance Waikel recorded three reversals in an 8-7 win over Moore in the 182-pound title match.
“Last year I lost to (him) at districts ten to zero, so I was kind of looking for redemption,” Waikel said. “Friday, we were working on just stuff that he does because he bumped down (to 182) kind of last second, so I was just looking for redemption and I didn’t want to lose to him again.”
Ranked sixth at 195 pounds Moore (26-10) moved into the 182 bracket at sectionals on Saturday and was the top seed.
Waikel (29-10) pinned Kris Boone of WACO in the semifinals before pulling the upset of Moore in the final.
Waikel broke a 6-6 deadlock with his third reversal of the match with 52 seconds remaining to secure the sectional title at a spot at the Class 1A, District 7 meet next Saturday at Wapello.
“I think that was just my mindset, I needed to win this to win it all and get a good seed at district,” Waikel said. “I think that was my motivation.”
The title by Waikel was part of a strong day for Regina as the Regals crowned two champs and qualified five wrestlers for districts while finishing runner-up in the team standings with 159 points.
Lisbon won the team title with 252.5 while WACO was third with 153.5.
Junior Ronan Poynton won the 195-pound title and seniors Sam Aitchison, Aidan Udell and Caden Shetler all advanced with runner-up finishes.
Poynton (32-5), ranked 10th at 220 pounds, won a 5-0 decision over Lisbon’s Indy Ferguson in the 195-pound title match.
Aitchison (34-5) dropped a 7-6 decision to Kendal Pugh of Louisa-Muscatine in the 160-pound title match.
In one of the premier matches of the day second-ranked Max Kohl (36-3) of Lisbon won a 4-2 decision over third-ranked Udell (32-3) in the 170-pound championship.
Kohl had a takedown in the first period and a reversal in the second on his way to securing the title.
Fifth-ranked Jonah Clark (42-1) of WACO pinned Shetler (29-15) in 1:25 in the 220-pound final.
