One week after dropping his second match of the season to a top-ranked wrestler in the finals of the Ed Hadenfeldt Invitational Solon senior Gage Marty recorded his first win over a top-ranked foe.

Marty handed Class 2A top-ranked Easton Fleshman of West Lyon his first loss of the season with a 3-1 win in the 285-pound finals of the Herb Irgens Invitational on Saturday in Ida Grove.

The individual title by Marty helped Solon to a seventh-place team finish with 108 points.

Class 1A top-ranked Don Bosco won the team title with 245.5 points followed by Sergeant Bluff-Luton with 208.5 and Tonganoxie, Kansas with 160.

Ranked third in Class 2A at 285 pounds, Marty fell to Class 3A top-ranked Jake Walker of Waverly-Shell Rock in the championship match of the Hadenfeldt Invitational last Saturday.

The senior was dominant at the two-day event in Ida Grove posting three consecutive pins to reach the finals where he handed Fleshman (36-1) his first loss.

Marty (35-2) pinned sixth-ranked Nick Bronstad of Okoboji in the semifinals.

Freshman Jordan Schmidt added a fourth-place finish for Solon at 126 pounds and Lucas Kampman finished fourth at 170 pounds.

David Karam was sixth for the Spartans at 152 pounds.
