One of the top distance runners in the state will do his collegiate running in the state of Iowa.
West High senior standout Alex McKane announced his commitment to Iowa State with a post on social media.
“Dream come true! I am beyond excited to announce my commitment to Iowa State University to continue my academic and athletic careers as a Cyclone,” McKane wrote on Twitter. “Thank you to Coach Wallace and Coach Sudbury for giving me this opportunity and thank you to my coaches and family for the constant support.”
Over the past several seasons McKane has steadily emerged as one of the best distance runners in the state.
A four-time state qualifier in cross country McKane finished 68th as a freshman and 32nd as a sophomore before posting consecutive top-15 finishes at the Class 4A state meet the past two seasons.
McKane was 11th at the state meet as a junior and capped a breakthrough senior season with a state runner-up finish in a time of 15:30.65.
As a senior McKane won Mississippi Valley Conference Super Meet and Divisional Meet titles on his way to being named MVC athlete of the year and finished runner-up at the state qualifying meet.
McKane was a two-event individual medalist at the state track and field meet last spring as a junior.
He was seventh in the 1,600 in a time of 4:25.88 and placed fifth in the 3,200 in 9:37.8.
