IOWA CITY – Fourth-ranked City High was pleased to pick up a double-digit conference win on Tuesday.
The Little Hawks are happy to be 2-0 on the season and ranked in the top-five in Class 5A.
However a 60-50 win over Dubuque Senior (2-1) on Tuesday evening in Iowa City left the Little Hawks wanting more.
“There is more, there is definitely more out there for us,” senior Eviyon Richardson said. “There is more to work on, definitely more we can get better at. We haven’t played to the best our ability yet. There is definitely more there.”
Kelsey Joens had a game-high 22 points and Richardson had a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds as City High pulled away after halftime.
The Little Hawks shot just 37 percent in the first half and led 28-22 at halftime before outscoring the Rams 18-11 in the third quarter.
Joens had 14 of her 22 after halftime helping City High put the game out of reach.
“We just worked together,” Joens said of the halftime adjustment. “In the first half we didn’t gel together and the second half we talked about we need to work together as a team and we did that and it really opened up shots for people.”
City High steadily pulled away from the Rams on Tuesday leading by five after one quarter and six at the half.
Still, City High was far from sharp over the opening 16 minutes.
“We need more practice time together and we have to do the little things right in practice,” City High coach Bill McTaggart said. “This is one of those teams that has a bigger margin for success, we aren’t close to our potential right now.”
City High showed what it could do in the second half.
The Little Hawks used a 13-3 run that spanned more than three minutes in the third quarter to turn a five-point lead into a 43-28 margin.
Four different players had a basket during the 13-0 spurt that included 3-pointers from Joens, senior Andie Westlake and freshman Emmy McComas.
“We are adding new pieces and trying to see where each person fits and we still haven’t figured it all out,” Joens said. “Once we figure that all out I think we will be pretty good.”
Senior Bella Cooley had eight points and seven rebounds for City High while Westlake added seven points and senior Georgia Kimm had six.
Things pick up for City High in a big way on Friday when it hosts second-ranked Waterloo West (3-0) on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
“Every day in practice it’s the little things we have to do to get better each day,” Richardson said. “We will keep working and keep getting better.”
