City High, West High and Solon will all open the season as top-10 ranked teams.

The trio of Your Prep Sports area teams were all inside the top eight in their respective classes when the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union released its preseason girls basketball rankings on Thursday.

City High opens the season ranked fourth in Class 5A after finishing 10-5 a year ago while West High starts the year at No. 8 in 5A after posting a 14-4 record and advancing to the 5A semifinals last season.

Solon opens the season ranked eighth in Class 4A.

The Spartans went 17-6 and advanced to a Class 3A regional final last season.

Top-ranked teams to open the season are Johnston (5A), Glenwood (4A), Unity Christian (3A), Dike-New Hartford (2A) and Newell-Fonda (1A).
