The game itself was far from perfection but Class 3A third-ranked Solon kept its season record spotless.

Solon overcame an early 10-0 deficit, four turnovers and 10 penalties on Friday improving to 8-0 on the season with a 35-17 win over Grinnell in a 3A, District 5 showdown in Grinnell.

Sean Stahle rushed for 209 yards and three touchdowns and Blake Timmons added 123 yards and a score as the Spartans rolled up 335 yards on the ground while securing the District 5 title.

Solon moved to 4-0 in District 5 play and will host Keokuk (2-6) in the regular season finale on Friday.

The Spartans had a sluggish start on Friday.

After a scoreless first quarter the Spartans fell into a 10-0 hole before rattling off 14 unanswered points to close the half.

Timmons got the Spartans on the board with an 80-yard touchdown run and Logan Sieverding gave Solon a 14-10 halftime advantage when he returned an interception 77 yards for a touchdown.

Stahle scored on second-half touchdown runs of 60, 4 and 39 yards as Solon outscored the Tigers 21-7 after intermission.

Grinnell dropped to 5-3 with the loss and 3-1 in district play and finished with 192 total yards on Friday.

Parker Pentico had an interception for Solon while Gage Marty had seven tackles and a sack.
