The temperature finally feels like fall which means only one thing in high school sports, the football playoffs are right around the corner.

Postseason football gets underway next Friday in the four smallest classes and teams got their first look at playoff opponents on Saturday when the Iowa High School Athletic Association released the first-round matchups for Class 2A, 1A, A and 8-player.

Regina and West Branch are each part of the 32-team field in Class 1A and will each open with home games.

Third-ranked Regina (8-0) will host River Valley Conference rival Cascade (4-4) on Friday at Regal Field.

The District 3 champion, Regina has won 19 consecutive games and won the Class A state title a year ago.

Cascade finished fourth in District 4 after receiving a win via forfeit against Postville in its regular season finale.

The Cougars lost in the Class 1A second round last season.

West Branch (6-2) finished second in District 3 and earned an opening-round home game with a 28-12 win over Wilton on Friday.

West Branch will host Cardinal (5-3) on Friday at the Little Rose Bowl in West Branch.

Cardinal opened the season 5-0 but lost its final three games while finishing third in District 6.

The Comets fell to Pleasantville 29-28 in the regular season finale on Friday.

There are no playoff brackets and matchups will be reseeded following each round.

The second round is set for October 29 at home sites.
