Big Second Quarter Leads West Branch Past Durant For Fourth Straight Win

Another week, another solid district win for West Branch.
The Bears scored 21 second-quarter points and held Durant to 89 yards after halftime on their way to a 28-14 win over the Wildcats on Friday in a Class 1A, District 5 matchup at the Little Rose Bowl.
West Branch improved to 5-1 on the season and 3-0 in district play with its fourth consecutive win while Durant dropped to 1-5 and 1-2 in District 5 play.
Durant took its only lead of the game at 8-7 when Nolan DeLong ripped off an 82 yard touchdown run and added the two-point conversion run with 5:11 left in the opening quarter.
It took a little time but West Branch had the answer.
West Branch scored touchdowns on its final three possessions of the first half, highlighted by a 99-yard scoring march.
Trailing 8-7 West Branch got the ball back on a Holden Arnaman interception and marched 75 yards in five plays taking a 14-8 lead on a 25-yard scoring strike from Carver Boelk to Peyton Miller with 10:48 left in the first half.
Kinnick Boelk recovered a fumble on the ensuing Durant possession and four plays later Carver Boelk scored on a 1 yard touchdown run to push the lead to 21-8.
The Bears to full control with perhaps their most impressive drive of the season just before the half.
West Branch went 99 yards in eight plays in a span of 3:49 and took a 28-8 lead when Andy Henson scored on a 13-yard touchdown run with 1:14 left in the opening half.
Henson carried six times for 83 yards on the drive, including a 47-yard burst on a third-and-two play and finished with 226 yards on 26 carries.
Carver Boelk went 9-of-14 passing for 116 yards with Miller catching four passes for 28 yards and Kinnick Boelk making three receptions for 38 yards.
Cash Woody and Arnaman each had interceptions and Kinnick Boelk recovered a fumble as West Branch forced three Durant turnovers.
Kinnick Boelk had a team-high 5.5 tackles and Jaxson Kaalberg had a sack as the Bears held Durant to 237 yards of total offense.
West Branch travels to fourth-ranked Regina (6-0) next week for a battle of District 5 unbeatens.
